Image
Image Source: Saujan's Instagram I love to travel the Himalayan areas of Nepal. Last month when travelling to Pokhara, one of the incredible cities on planet earth. Suddenly, Ghandruk came into my mind without much delay me along with my brother decided to explore the magnificent beauty of Ghandruk. We started our journey early in the morning from Pokhara with a 55-KM drive on the Pokhara-Baglung highway passing the beautiful towns of Hemaja, Phedi, and Naudanda. First, we reached the Nayapul, the trail goes up a steep slope leading to the suspension bridge over the Modi Khola. After half an hour hiking we reached the beautiful and crowded Bhirethati. At the point of Bhirethati, the path divided into two. The path going west leads to the trail to Ghorepani pass and the right path that we took leads to the Ghandruk. On the way, there are so many beautiful hotels and tea spot. You don’t have to worry about daal bhaat (Typical Nepali Food). As you passed the trails you ...

Book Review: ‘When Breath Becomes Air,’ Dr. Paul Kalanithi

Image
Dr. Lucy Kalanithi and Dr. Paul Kalanithi with their daughter, Elizabeth Acadia. Courtesy of Lucy Kalanithi Upon finishing When Breath Becomes Air, Instantly, I posted on social media with the subject line MUST READ. It’s very rare to find Nonfiction book like this. So, I strongly recommend everyone in my life to read once. In 2013 Paul Kalanithi was diagnosed with terminal cancer when he was 36 years old. This age is very limited for many of us to make big difference in the world. But, Paul had already made the tremendous contribution in the field of medicine. His research on gene therapy consider as one of the best research in the world and helped him to win the highest research award as well. He was brilliant doctor and scientist. Paul was a neurosurgeon by profession at Stanford University School of Medicine. He accrues two B.A.s and an M.A. in literature at...

Elevating Youth Empowerment through Youth Council

Image
My journey started in 2015 when I was selected to be part of the Youth Council of the US Embassy in Nepal, I felt both honored and overwhelmed with emotions. I was nervous and felt great responsibility, but moreover privileged to be part of a group making changes and influencing the youth of Nepal. In the council I meet like-minded youth aged 23- 27 from all around the country with varied background who all had great mission towards their community and country.  During the whole year period of time I found US Youth Council is a part of youth empowerment program where youth like us can identify, document and analyze problems in their own community that they would like to address through community development projects and also known as Civic Engagement Project (CEP). “Learn to Tech for Reconstruction” as seed funding by US Embassy Nepal is this year CEP that now I am currently working along with my technical reconstruction group.   I believe and being a gl...

Why Education 4.0?

Image
I spent exactly two decades of my life for better education. I’m now realizing that all the education I’ve gotten and am getting is incomplete. I remember those moments, studying for entire nights, mugging in loud voices and memorizing things every morning and evening to pass school exams.  The same experiences recur as we join college. This is not only me; majority of Nepali students have the mindset that if you can mug up, you can pass the exam easily. Our education never lets us think outside the box. Now I realize the value of education I am getting. Education should be a life-changing opportunity for everyone. But our education system ensures we only gain paper knowledge and paper degree, everything paper, but nothing real.  Sometimes I think about the future, somewhere around the 2050s. The real big question came to my mind if all these paper degrees and the traditional ways of sharing education are going to change somethin...

Should You Take A Gap Year?

Image
I made a strong decision in December of 2016 that I would undergo a gap year. I never informed my decision to anyone, not even my parents. A gap year, a year often taken between high school and college, or between the junior and senior year of college has long been a tradition in Europe and in America.   For Nepali students, taking a gap year is like a nightmare. A gap year will mean glares and unlimited questions of concern from your family members. Are they on the right track? Are they not serious about life, further study, work or anything else? These are some of the question you’ll face if you are in a gap year. I faced such situations too.   We all are aware of Malia Obama, Barak Obama’s daughter, taking a gap year before her freshman year at Harvard. Just like Malia, many students take a gap year in western countries. Most of the universities in the US suggest students to take a gap year, which can be tremendously...

THE FUTURE IS FEMALE

Image
When designer Prabal Gurung concluded his Fall/Winter 2017 fashion show in New York City, he showcased his t-shirt designs with tag-line ‘The Future is Female’. It was the most trending issue all over social media and in the fashion industry. Originally, the T-shirt design ‘The Future is Female’ was made for Labyris Book known as first women’s book store in New York City for the first time which was opened in 1972 by Jane Lurie and Marizel Rios. They raised their voices for women and their rights45 years ago in the US. Let’s get into the slogan, which has a very deep-seated meaning. And just imagine the future without women? Imagine this world without men? It is impossible. Now, we are living in very competitive world where simple things are getting complicated day by day. We talk about humanity, gender equality and sexuality almost every day. But we never think what happens when we work together for better changes. Talking about Nepal, 28 percent of women aged...
