Elevating Youth Empowerment through Youth Council

My journey started in 2015 when I was selected to be part of the Youth Council of the US Embassy in Nepal, I felt both honored and overwhelmed with emotions. I was nervous and felt great responsibility, but moreover privileged to be part of a group making changes and influencing the youth of Nepal. In the council I meet like-minded youth aged 23- 27 from all around the country with varied background who all had great mission towards their community and country.
During the whole year period of time I found US Youth Council is a part of youth empowerment program where youth like us can identify, document and analyze problems in their own community that they would like to address through community development projects and also known as Civic Engagement Project (CEP). “Learn to Tech for Reconstruction” as seed funding by US Embassy Nepal is this year CEP that now I am currently working along with my technical reconstruction group.
I believe and being a global citizen that some ideas should not limit with us it must be shared around the globe as a part of learning and exchanging. With this view I introduced and moderate Skype conversation in “Youth Issues: Grass Root to Global” between the US Embassy Youth Council Nepal as well as with member of US Embassy Alumni Pakistan and US Embassy Youth Council of Ireland.

The members of the Youth Council had the opportunity to spend a fun and productive weekend in Kathmandu, during which we discussed internal issues, activities and future plan about our project. US Embassy Nepal also organized different program targeted to youth council like Entrepreneurship Speaker series, Interaction among the US students, Guest Speaking activities where guest are mostly invited from United States, CV writing and Job interview training facilitated by HR department of US Embassy. In the same way the council members was also fascinated one day long program in the leadership by Dr. Pukar Malla, Harvard Kennedy School Graduate and expert in the field of leadership, who spoke about topics such as leading your Leadership story in the complex society of today and public speaking.
In last year in December 2015, newly appointed US Ambassador to Nepal Her Excellency Alaina B Teplitz invited us in Ambassador Talk Series Program. We had discussion about topic “Let Girls Learn”. We talked about the girl’s problem in getting difficulties education to empower girl here in Nepal and how can we together to address them. Ambassador also shared her story what she had faced and seen about girl’s problem during her college days to undergrad days in the States. At the end of the program she quoted to us “Every girl’s problems are not only their problems we all are equal responsible and must serious towards them to solve through our maximum participation”. Let Girls Learn is a United States government initiative to ensure adolescent girls get the education they deserve. In Nepal also we marked this program through our active participation in social media via facebook and twitter with hash tag #16Day #LetGirlsLearn

Upon reflection, today I would say I am part of the Youth Council because of my inspiration, my motivation, my urge, and my belief in the change and in the youth. I trust that the youth have the power to make changes, to be active, and to greatly influence their future and present. We youth are the real change maker for our better society and for our country. Again, youth council is back with new membership application, so I encourage proactive youth to be part of this mission and be a part of change.
